We Buy Books
We are a general interest store and buy all sorts of books, including contemporary fiction and non-fiction, classics, cookbooks and art books. There are a few types of books we don’t buy: textbooks, computer manuals and books about computer programs, hardcover mysteries, out-of-date travel guides, or books in poor condition (mildew, broken spine, etc.). Beyond that, we decide what to take on a book-by-book basis. Some employees are not yet trained to buy, so we recommend you call us beforehand to verify that a book buyer is on the schedule. We love your books!
Do you pay for books in cash or store credit?
For most books we offer store credit, also called "Trade," but for extremely desirable books we offer cash. If you're willing to take store credit for cash books, we offer 50% more. The amount we pay for books is based on their current cover price and condition. We pay competitively with other used book stores.
Do I need to use my store credit on the same day?
No, it lasts forever. It can be used in the future, as well as in our other stores, Dog Eared Books on Valencia and Castro
Will you buy books at my house?
We have a small staff and thus can do "Out Buys" only for collections with over a thousand (1,000) books, and only if the books sound especially valuable or unusual.
What can I do with the books you can't buy?
We have a free box outside the store so you can donate them to the neighborhood.
Will you carry the book I wrote?
Feel free to bring by a copy for the manager so that we can see if it’s a good fit for us. If it’s a good match, we can buy one or two copies outright and see how they sell. Also, since we don’t have a computerized inventory, we recommend checking in on your title periodically to find out if we need more.
Do you buy music, movies, magazines, or books on tape?
